Directory of Links: When people "search" the Internet for goods and services, many or most of the time they use what is referred to as a search engine. If you think about it, a search engine, such as Google, at its base, is nothing more than an accumulation of links to other web sites... a directory of links.

Ranking Through Popularity/Content: In order to promote use of their search engine, search engine firms decided to rank their links according to popularity. Since they can not actually monitor how often every web site is accessed they instead decided to track how many other web sites or pages are linked or are pointing to any other given site. The assumption is that if enough people have a link on their web site pointing to a different web site then there must be something good on the web site that is being linked to. The more web sites that you can get to point to your web site the better. The search engines will then rank your web higher because it is more popular and is "apparently" providing good content. Otherwise, nobody would link to it.

Search engines send out bots that read and document your web pages, as they do for every other web site. Part of this categorization process includes those links to other similar sites that you are linked to, and those similar sites that are linked to you. As more and more similar sites link to you, your page ranking increases and consequently your position in the retrieved pages on searched subjects pertaining to your site .
Linking to unrelated sites can be counter productive. The bots are more intelligent now than they were in the early 90's and can actually degrade your search page status if they determine that most links to your site have nothing in common with what your site is all about.
